What an honor it is, for a small town guy like myself, to be asked to contribute to this plethora of “mobile hunting” knowledge that Trophyline is assembling in Mobile Venatic™, organized place for all of us to use! First, let me introduce myself and give you a little insight into what I would like to get out of this column each and every month!
My name is Clint Casper and I’m a small town farm boy from Northeastern Ohio. I currently write full time for Petersen’s Bowhunting and contribute to a ton of online journals, blogs and internet websites. I am also the host of The CC Hunt Files podcast presented by The Working Class Bowhunter platform. I have two little boys that keep me and my life in the fast lane, Easton is six and Keaton is three!
Growing up, bow hunting, farming and sports were all that mattered to me and I learned quickly that I needed to be very good at time management if I wanted to partake in all three! Mobile hunting was just becoming a tactic that was being talked about some here and there, mainly with the use of climbing tree stands! This really intrigued me that I could go in, hunt, climb down and either come back or continue on the next time to a new spot! From those early days mobile hunting has been my personal go-to method for bow hunting whitetails and also big game!
For the last ten years, I have been exclusively bow hunting and loving every second of it! The western big game bug has bit me extremely hard and I found myself traveling to western states all throughout the fall with mule deer, elk and antelope tags in my pockets! High country mule deer have been all the rage for myself lately and have stolen most of my current thoughts and dreams! There’s nothing like backcountry living, surviving with only what I can fit inside my pack and heading off into an unknown territory above the clouds, in search of the grey ghosts that call these mountain ranges home! But, do not think for a second that my whitetails still don’t hold a special place in my heart!
When it comes to whitetails I fall into the “one specific buck” category and boy oh boy, do I absolutely love to play that game! To me, there isn’t anything better in the whitetail woods than matching wits with a specific, mature buck, all season long. In my opinion this chess match is what drives me year in and year out! To go into a specific bucks bedroom, or dining room per say and attempt to run an arrow through him without him knowing of your presence is what makes this Ohio boy tick! I absolutely cannot get enough of learning the behaviors and personality of each individual buck that I target!
When it comes to this specific column I wanted to break down how I am meticulously approaching each bow hunt and the calculated moves that I make! I can be very aggressive at times and then very patient in another instant! But I am always very, very calculated in my moves and mobile hunting has allowed me to showcase my abilities as a bowhunter by combining calculated planning with high risk moves! I want to tear into each month of the year as I prepare, train, hunt or reflect on what the year has brought. In the end, I want to showcase how I look at, plan for and execute my bow hunts from month to month! Is my way the only way, OR the right way for everyone? Absolutely not, but it works for me and I want to share my knowledge and what I’ve learned over the years in my mobile hunting journey! So there you have it, welcome aboard to the Calculated Killer Column! Good luck this fall, I hope you enjoy it!
